How Bronx Charter School for the Arts beat the odds — and what it means for your school.
If you live in New York City and wanted your child to receive a serious arts-based education, one name stood out: Bronx Charter School for the Arts.
Led by a deeply committed team of teachers and administrators, the school had built something real — a safe, high-quality, academically rigorous program that families trusted.
Inside the classroom, Bronx Charter School for the Arts was thriving. But the world outside its doors had other plans.
The local school landscape had grown more crowded — and more competitive — with new options pulling from the same families.
Bronx Arts was a K-8 school, but less than 60% of students made the jump from 5th to 6th grade.
Birth rates among Latino and Black students — Bronx Arts' core student base — had dropped to their lowest in 20 years.
But Bronx Arts wasn't just a school - it was a haven, woven into the fabric of the neighborhood. In this safe space, students and families had built a community and helped each other thrive. Bronx Arts was worthy. And it was ready to push back against the headwinds it faced. We made it our mission to help them succeed.
Every charter school can proclaim a safe environment and a dedicated staff.
It can also point to solid educational outcomes. But in a demographically-shifting, hyper-competitive educational landscape, those elements are no longer enough. To truly solve the enrollment challenge, a school has to identify the thing or things that make it so compelling to the right audiences that families will stop and say my child has to go to this school. In our work with school staff, leadership and families, two elements stood out to us: the quality of their arts program and deep Bronx roots.
Whether it was visual arts, theater or music – the arts permeated the school; it was part of their very DNA. The staff were professional artists – dancers that toured with major acts, artists who’d been teaching their entire lives, professional musicians. If you wanted an arts-based education in the Bronx, this was the school to be at. Here, Bronx Arts was untouchable.
But there was a second, intangible element that we recognized immediately. Bronx Charter and its community were one and the same.
The Bronx is tough, warm, creative, and dynamic — a place where people show up for each other and take pride in their work – the exact set of traits Bronx Charter instilled in its students. This was incredibly compelling to families and parents that their children were modeling in school that very traits that would carry them through school and beyond.
Working with school leadership, we developed messaging that captured this spirit, and that became the foundation of the Bronx Arts Story
An unparalleled arts education. A culture and environment grounded in the local community.
With the story defined, we needed a place to tell it. The Bronx Arts website became that foundation - a rich, immersive experience that we designed to make families feel what it was like to be at the school before they ever walked through the door. Every image, every word, every design choice was built around one question: why would I want my child here? (For a deeper look at how we built the site, you can read that story here).
All the pieces were now in place. A strong, recognizable brand. A message and value proposition that resonated deeply in the community.
But this is where many charter schools stop — assuming that if the school is good enough, families will find their way to it. In a less crowded landscape, maybe. But today, quality alone doesn't fill seats. Word of mouth doesn't either.
For years, Bronx Arts had invested modestly in outdoor and print advertising. That foundation created real top-of-funnel awareness — but it wasn't enough to move the needle on enrollment. To stand out and be seen, Bronx Arts had to be bold.
They had to be on the platforms where parents and caregivers were actually spending their time: Facebook, Instagram, Google Search, and the Google Display Network.
We ran custom ads - in both English and Spanish - from November straight through to Lottery Day. Along the way we monitored performance closely, optimized what was working, and developed retargeted ads to stay in front of the most engaged families.
It will take time, patience and lots of work. But the payoff is consistently filled classrooms. If you're inspired by Bronx Arts' journey and would like to explore enrollment marketing for your school, contact us today. We'll listen and give honest feedback.
